The sole intention of this post if to raise awareness on the issue of HDMI cable pricing. I will counter some regular boasts made by cable manufacturers in hopes of revealing the true difference between different brands. Walk into the audio/video accessories department of any large consumer electronics chain and it is immediately apparent that cable pricing is a bit extreme. Companies such as Monster Cable are able to charge consumers over $200 for a piece of cable less than 6.5ft long. Unfortunately, customers are being suckered into purchasing these incredibly expensive cables in hopes of improving the quality of audio and video content streamed to their speakers and television sets. While purchasing my Sony XBR television earlier this year, I too was told by salesmen that “cheaper cables offer output signal of an inferior quality.” To an average consumer spending a large sum of money on high end home theater products, claims such as these make it an almost necessity to purchase such accessories. Even more unfortunate is the fact that, victims to this scam often experience a placebo effect out of trying to justify the reason for their expensive purchase.
