Transferring a WordPress site between hosts

Recently, we decided to switch our hosting provider due to issues relating to uptime and server speed. The entire process of transferring our WordPress installation between hosts was documented and turned into a video tutorial to aid others wishing to do the same thing. The tutorial is about 8 minutes long and covers everything from backing up the data to changing the DNS settings. The end benefit of using the technique demonstrated in the video is, your visitors will see absolutely no downtime as you transfer between hosts.

Here is a list of the steps covered in the tutorial. Feel free to skip any part that you may feel you already have sufficient knowledge on:

  • Backup Data via FTP (Public_html -> Drag to local directory) 0:23 – 1:15
  • WordPress MySql database backup (Use phpMyadmin)   1:16-2:16
  • Login to new host’s control panel (Use server ip address)  2:17 –  3:12
  • Restoring the MySql database (Create blank database & use phpMyadmin)  3:13 -4:58
  • Restoring WordPress Frontend data (Archive & use Cpanel File manager) 4:59 – 6:52
  • Modify the WordPress configuration file (Update the database settings) 6:53 – 7:10
  • Change the DNS of your domain name (Use domain provider’s control panel) 7:12 – 7:47
  • Check is DNS has been updated (Use network-tooks.com to verify) 7:48 – 8:03
